Aim: I want to find out how red cabbage can tell if liquid is an acid or a base.
Research:
Method:
Equipment:
- Acid - Hydrochloric acid
- Base - Sodium Hydroxide
- Red Cabbage
- Water
- Cup/Beaker
- Test tube
- Dropper
Instructions:
- Wash your hands.
- Get all of your equipment required.
- Add water to your cup/beaker.
- Break the cabbage into small pieces.
- Mix the red cabbage and water together with the dropper until it starts to turn dark purple. ( The darker the water the better the colours will be)
- With the dropper add three drops of the purple water to each test tube.
- For the first time just add the acid to one of the test tubes and base to another.
- Gradually add the base and acid to each test tube.
- Add as many drops of acid and base to create colours. (Make sure you don't get any of the acid or base on your hands).
- Maybe even try to layer the colours on top of each other.
Results:
Q1 : What is an Acid and a Base?
A1 : Acid is a substance that gives hydrogen ion and donates to a substance. When the acid is added to the cabbage water it creates a pigment and changes the colour. Base is a substance that takes the acid.
Q2 : What do chemical indicators do?
A2: The Chemical indicators creates the chemical reaction. Which makes the colour appear when the acid and base is included in the cabbage water.
