Canterbury Floods News Report

Salam (Hello),

This week in hurumanu 2 with Miss Alpers we have been researching about the Canterbury that has been happening this week. We read a article about the floods and had to write a detailed blog post about it.  Below this small blurb a shortened story about the floods.

Met-service got a code-red warning in Canterbury which was expected to bring up to 400mm high by Monday. Springfield, the upper and lower part of Sewlyn Huts and peel forest, locals had to evacuate because of the massive floods. Kris Faafoi travelled throughout Canterbury to see the impact of  the rain and found out that about 3,000 houses were at risk of flooding. Burnham camp, three trucks and a ambulance got deployed to help with evacuations. Ashburton called the civil defence centre and locals got asked to boil their water. 30 houses in Selwyn district and spring field had been evacuated and safe.

Later in the day the Selwyn district council called a emergency civil defence team to help with this situation. People living in Selwyn huts had been evacuated and sent to darfield recreation centre. The water supplier got shut down due to the amount of flooding spread  throughout Canterbury. Farmers begun struggling, most farmers found struggling got evacuated by a helicopter and moved to dry land. A river in Christchurch got hit and got closed due to major flooding. Around 8pm a big tide of fresh new flooding went towards town.

Timaru also got declared of a state emergency, heavy rain showers came and concerned fellow locals. Two new people joined the civil defence team for Timaru to help people to evacuate. There were multiple road closers due to flooding and caused more people to evacuate. Fifty two schools and 24 early learning centres had been confirmed that it would be closed the next day. Many more problems had happened due to the flooding throughout Canterbury this included : trees falling, power cut outs, road closers etc.

I hope this blog post was interesting and taught you something about the big showers in Canterbury. Feel free to comment. What do you know about the Canterbury floods, were you involved in evacuating?

Orchestra ( Counting the beat) 🎀

 Hey Readers!

This week in counting the beat in hurumanu 2 we have been learning about orchestra, a orchestra is a group of stringed instruments. The first thing we did was look at different instrument family's  in orchestras the first instrument we learnt about was the woodwind, a woodwind is like a flute it blows wind and was originally made out of wood, the next instrument we learnt about was the brass, they are sort of like a trumpet but with a different shape, music is made from your lip vibrating onto the mouth piece and some other parts. The last type of instrument we learnt about was ... the percussion family. The percussion family include instruments similar to pianos such as.. xylophone, bass drum, snare drum etc. Then we watched a  you tube video of a orchestra  the video was this group of 1000 students, they did the orchestra during lock down and the music beautiful they played the song "Jupiter." Next we got to see some instruments in real life we got to feel them as well, they were instruments  that would be in a orchestra in person we got to see the violin, flute, recorder and some other instruments but I forgot their names. My favourite instrument I got to feel was the big flute because it was something new for me. Have you learnt about instruments before?

Counting the beat ( ukulele & recorder)

 Kia Ora Readers!

This week in counting the beat we have been learning about ukulele's and the recorder/flute we first had to answer some questions, such as " what to do you know about ukulele?" After that we watched some you tube videos of people playing the ukulele and making music with ukulele. We learnt about the different sizes and shapes with different colours and features. 3 glossary terms are sound hole, headlock and bridge. For the  recorder there is the mouth piece, block and tane hole. Some students got to play a song with ukulele they choose to play the lion sleeps tonight. Today we learnt about the recorder we got to listen to some tunes and play some tunes. The first few tunes we learnt we did pretty good on but the last ones not so much. Playing the recorder for me was a little bit easy at first but then the tunes got a bit confusing. We also got to see the different sizes  there were big, small and medium sizes, but we played the small ones.

Guitars (Counting the beat)

 Hey Readers!

Yesterday in my  hurumanu class we learn't about all the different types of guitars and how they work. First we answered some question to do with guitars such as... what do you know about guitars? Then Mr Mitchell showed us some types of guitars and how they work and look. Every guitar was very unique and had there own way of working. We learn't about the parts of guitars and what they do to work the guitar some parts are : frets, rosette, and neck. Some guitars even had more strings than others. After that we listened to some music that had guitars playing in it. Then we got to see Mr Mitchell play some of his guitars he had. Next we got to play some of the guitars I played the travel, electric, and air guitar. My favourite guitar I played was the Air guitar because it was very fun but it was out of tune. Have you ever played a guitar?
